Sultan of Johor Cup: India-Pakistan players shake hands before match, break ‘no-handshake’ trend of cricketers
On October 14, during the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia, players from India and Pakistan participated in a symbolic handshake prior to their match, breaking a recent trend of non-contact between the teams, reports 24brussels.
This gesture follows increased tensions in recent cricket competitions, where India’s men’s and women’s teams refrained from shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts during the Asia Cup and the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup hosted by India, while Pakistan’s matches are being played in Colombo. This trend, initiated by Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav, had been controversial, leading to complaints from the Pakistani men’s team against match referee Andy Pycroft, resulting in his removal from officiating duties for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct and ‘Spirit of Cricket’.
During the live stream of the match on Ashley Morrison Media’s YouTube channel, players from both sides were seen exchanging handshakes. The match concluded in a thrilling 3-3 draw, with India making a comeback from a two-goal deficit to secure a share of the points. This result ensured that India remains undefeated in the tournament.
In a dynamic encounter, goals for India were scored by Araijeet Singh Hundal (43′), Sourabh Anand Kushwaha (47′), and Manmeet Singh (53′). Pakistan responded with efforts from Hannan Shahid (5′) and Sufyan Khan (39′, 55′). The contest was marked by India’s early dominance, accumulating significant possession and creating chances, which included a missed penalty corner in the third minute.
Against the run of play, Pakistan seized the lead through a swift counterattack. Hannan Shahid confidently converted a penalty stroke, signaling Pakistan’s intent. As the game progressed, both teams exchanged opportunities; however, Pakistan maintained a narrow lead at halftime despite India’s continued attempts to equalize, even while playing with a man down after Anmol Ekka received a yellow card.
In the second half, India ramped up their efforts, aiming for an equalizer. Despite Pakistan doubling their lead through Sufyan Khan’s conversion of a penalty corner, India remained resilient. Araijeet Singh Hundal’s penalty stroke drew India closer, ending the third quarter with Pakistan leading 2-1.
The final quarter saw an intense battle, with India striking back just two minutes into the quarter through Sourabh Anand Kushwaha, leveling the score. Soon after, Manmeet Singh added another for India, giving them a short-lived lead, as Sufyan Khan capitalized on another penalty corner to restore parity for Pakistan. Both teams searched for a winner in the final minutes, but the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
India’s next match will take place against Australia on October 15 at 18:05 IST.
