Sri Lankan PM to make first official visit to India from October 16-18

New Delhi, October 15, 2025: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya will visit India from October 16 to 18, marking her first official trip to the country since assuming office, reports 24brussels. She is scheduled to meet with Indian political leaders to discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest.

During her visit, Amarasuriya is set to deliver the keynote address at the NDTV World Summit, an event jointly organized by NDTV and the Chintan Research Foundation in Delhi. As the Education Minister of Sri Lanka, she will also visit the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and NITI Aayog to explore collaboration opportunities in education and technology.

Amarasuriya, a distinguished alumna of the Hindu College of Delhi University, plans to visit her alma mater. Furthermore, she will participate in a business event aimed at strengthening commercial ties between Sri Lanka and India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

This visit reinforces the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two nations, advancing their deep and multifaceted bilateral relationship. It underscores the bonds of friendship fostered by India’s ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’ and its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. On October 2, Amarasuriya, alongside Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Temple Trees, the official residence and office of the Prime Minister in Colombo.

In a post on X, the High Commission of India in Colombo stated, “Hon’ble Prime Minister @Dr_HariniA, along with High Commissioner @santjha, offered floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Temple Trees today.” This year marks the 156th birth anniversary of Gandhi, who is remembered as the Father of the Nation for his significant role in India’s struggle for independence.

Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, was a pioneer of non-violent resistance. Through his philosophy of ahimsa and satyagraha, he mobilized millions of Indians against British colonial rule. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi, just months following India’s independence.
