Brazilian Groups Urge Government to Support Venezuela Amid U.S. Military Threats

A coalition of over 40 Brazilian social organizations, unions, and political entities voiced strong opposition to recent U.S. military maneuvers near the Venezuelan coast. In a document delivered to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on August 28, these groups condemned the deployment of warships as a severe threat to Venezuelan sovereignty, reports 24brussels.

The statement highlights that such actions are intended to destabilize Venezuela’s internal order and escalate regional tensions. The involved organizations, which include the Central of Popular Movements and the National Union of Students, sharply criticized statements from U.S. President Donald Trump about Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, labeling them “unfounded” and contrary to principles of peaceful coexistence. They assert that Washington’s rhetoric revives militaristic tactics that breach international law, fostering instability instead.

“It is evident that these military threats are intended to incite internal tensions in Venezuela,” the document states, cautioning that an aggressive U.S. policy would only worsen the situation. In contrast, the Brazilian groups advocate for dialogue and respect for the self-determination of nations to resolve conflicts.

Additionally, the organizations recalled the commitment made at the CELAC Summit in Havana in 2014 to declare Latin America and the Caribbean a “Zone of Peace,” obliging regional countries to reject any external military intervention. “The continent must unite against any attempt at external intervention,” the document emphasizes.

In a concluding appeal, the organizations urged the Brazilian government to publicly reaffirm its support for Venezuela, citing the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. They emphasized that prioritizing diplomacy and harmony is essential in the face of perceived imperialist threats.
