Alex Kicillof urges support for Peronist ‘Fuerza Patria’ amid economic crisis.
As over 13 million residents of Buenos Aires province prepare to vote on Sunday to renew provincial legislatures and city councils, a rally by President Javier Milei in Moreno has sparked controversy. Accused of attempting to distract from a corruption scandal involving his sister, Karina Milei, who allegedly received multimillion-dollar bribes, the rally saw significant backlash, reports 24brussels.
Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof condemned Milei’s rally as a “provocation.” He criticized the president for failing to uphold campaign promises and exacerbating Argentina’s economic crisis while being implicated in corruption related to kickbacks in the National Disability Agency’s (ANDIS) purchase of medicine.
“There is a productive catastrophe,” Kicillof stated, referencing the economic hardships faced by many in Greater Buenos Aires, which houses a significant low-income population. He emphasized the urgent need for voters to support the Peronist coalition “Fuerza Patria” to counter Milei’s administration.
Kicillof highlighted the rapid economic decline, citing increasing requests for food and medical assistance that citizens cannot meet. He criticized Milei for his refusal to acknowledge the damage inflicted by his policies, labeling the administration as a “government of triple fraud” amid ongoing corruption allegations against senior officials.
The governor pointed out the contradiction in Milei’s claim of not being part of the “political caste,” as many of his close aides are implicated in public fund corruption. In an apparent strategy to limit criticism, Milei traveled to Los Angeles following his tension-laden campaign closure, where he plans meetings with prominent figures including biomedicine engineer Noel de Castro and economist Michael Milken.
Milei’s itinerary also includes a discussion with Mark A. Nelson, vice president of U.S. oil company Chevron, as he seeks to engage with foreign firms operating in Argentina’s lucrative Vaca Muerta shale formation.
