Threats to Democracy in Honduras: Arrests Made in Assassination Plot
On August 14, 2025, Honduran authorities arrested Arcadio Lopez, Perfecto Enamorado, and Antonio Catan, charging them with terrorism and attempted murder as part of a conspiracy to assassinate former President Manuel Zelaya and overthrow current President Xiomara Castro, reports 24brussels.
The plot aimed not only to destabilize the state but also to disrupt the upcoming 2025 general elections, thus jeopardizing social peace and democracy in Honduras. Attorney General Joel Zelaya stated that the attempted attack against Zelaya was part of a broader scheme to prevent the elections scheduled for November 30, emphasizing that it was intended to instigate an early ouster of President Castro.
“This case is not based on conjecture or rumors. The evidence we present today is based on irrefutable scientific proof,” the Attorney General asserted, noting ongoing efforts to expand charges against additional individuals and urging public trust in the prosecution’s commitment to uphold democratic integrity.
Former President Zelaya condemned the conspiracy on social media, citing evidence of prior assassination plans against him dating back to 2009. Hector Zelaya, Castro’s private secretary, remarked that political violence has no place in Honduras, reiterating a longstanding narrative of threats against his family and their political legacy.
“Since 2009, we have denounced the hate campaign against my family, especially against my father, Manuel Zelaya, general coordinator of the party that fights for the Freedom and Refoundation of Honduras,” Hector Zelaya stated. He characterized the recent arrests as a significant step by the Public Ministry and expressed confidence in further investigations to identify all parties responsible.
“Neither fear, nor threats, nor violence will stop the Refoundation of Honduras. We remain steadfast, with more strength and conviction than ever,” he added.
