Independent Candidate Criticizes Chilean Government’s Land Proposals for Mapuche Communities
Lawyer Rosa Catrileo, the sole independent candidate for the Chilean Senate representing the Araucanía Region, criticized the government’s approach to the historical land demands of the Mapuche people, asserting that these proposals do not align with the interests of the communities, reports 24brussels.
Catrileo contended that the government’s intent is to commodify the aspirations for territorial restitution. She called for a new political agreement that ensures effective participatory processes leading to concrete solutions. “The communities have been clear: they rejected this consultation because the proposed new land system does not align with their demands. What is needed is to build a path to a solution with the Mapuche communities as political actors, and not for the communities,” she stated.
During her tour of various localities including Toltén, Villarrica, Cunco, and Angol, Catrileo engaged directly with community members, explaining the implications of the government’s proposal. She emphasized the need for the government to send a clear signal towards addressing the issue of land loss experienced by the Mapuche and urged an increase in the land and water fund to expedite the purchase of properties ready for transfer.
Catrileo underscored the necessity for a different political approach, one that involves listening to traditional leaders and ensuring all voices are represented. “Dialogue is essential,” she noted. She further asserted that her political independence serves as a guarantee for citizens: “I do not represent parties or foreign interests. I represent the voice of the people who want real solutions and not more empty promises,” she concluded.
