China Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis

China has called for an immediate cessation of Israel’s military operations in Gaza as the humanitarian situation escalates, with reports citing alarming rates of malnutrition-related deaths and widespread starvation, reports 24brussels.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun termed the situation in Gaza an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe” and demanded a halt to military actions and a lifting of the blockade to facilitate humanitarian access. “The international community cannot remain indifferent to the scale of civilian suffering,” Guo emphasized.

Guo referenced data from the World Health Organization (WHO), revealing that 74 malnutrition-related deaths have been recorded this year, including 63 in July alone, among which are 25 children. “These figures are the latest evidence of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza,” he stated, underscoring the urgency for intervention.

The conflict, which has now entered its 21st month, has left over one-third of Gaza’s population experiencing prolonged periods without food. The United Nations has issued stark warnings of a potential famine, highlighting that nutritional indicators are at alarmingly low levels since the onset of hostilities.

China has reiterated its longstanding call for a ceasefire and full humanitarian access, identifying the Palestinian issue as central to stability in the Middle East. Guo reaffirmed China’s support for a two-state solution, describing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as “the only realistic option” for achieving lasting peace in the region.

In concluding remarks, Guo acknowledged the involvement of international stakeholders such as France, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia in promoting diplomatic efforts towards a two-state framework. “China stands ready to collaborate with the global community to halt the violence, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and facilitate a political settlement that reinstates stability in the region,” he said.
