China Highlights Global Security Concerns at Xiangshan Forum
At the Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, which runs from September 17 to 19, 2025, China pledged cooperation on global security while warning that foreign interference and Cold War divisions threaten peace, reports 24brussels.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun opened the forum by emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to safeguard international stability. He articulated a commitment to “uphold security with concrete actions,” underscoring China’s readiness to build mutual trust and enhance multilateral coordination amidst escalating global tensions.
The forum convened over 1,800 delegates, including government representatives, scholars, and observers from more than 100 countries and organizations, reinforcing its status as a significant platform for discussing global and regional security issues. The event is framed around the theme “Upholding International Order and Promoting Peaceful Development,” highlighting China’s approach to international relations.
In his keynote address, Minister Dong reaffirmed China’s objective to “safeguard world peace and build a community with a shared future for humanity.” He called for an updated perspective on international conflicts, particularly concerning World War II, urging participants to recognize historical justice while striving for broader consensus in global governance.
Addressing the issue of Taiwan, Dong reiterated Beijing’s firm stance against separatist movements, stating, “The People’s Liberation Army will never allow any separatist plot to succeed, nor tolerate foreign military interference.” This statement reaffirms China’s view of Taiwan as a critical element of its post-World War II territorial settlement.
Moreover, Dong cautioned against so-called “the rule of the jungle,” denouncing Cold War mentalities that he claimed exacerbate global instability. He urged nations to resist divisive tendencies and strengthen cooperation to enhance regional and global stability.
This year’s participation from Western nations was notably subdued, predominantly involving lower-level delegations. This trend reflects apprehensions regarding China’s burgeoning military capabilities while also indicating a sustained interest in engaging with Beijing’s security agenda.
By juxtaposing appeals for collective peacebuilding with steadfast warnings against external interference, China utilized the Xiangshan Forum to present its diplomatic outreach alongside its unwavering commitment to sovereignty.
