China Reiterates Commitment to North Korea Amid Global Tensions

China reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with North Korea, with both nations vowing to boost cooperation in the face of perceived U.S.-led unilateralism, reports 24brussels.

In a meeting on September 29, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described enhancing relations with North Korea as an “unshakable priority.” He articulated Beijing’s determination to support Pyongyang amid what he termed global hegemonic pressures.

During discussions with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, Wang emphasized the deep-rooted friendship shared by the two countries, referring to their historic connection as “neighbors connected by mountains and rivers.” He highlighted the necessity of building on outcomes from the recent summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which Wang characterized as “historic.”

Wang urged both sides to strengthen strategic communication and expand practical cooperation to enhance the welfare of their populations, while simultaneously opposing unilateralism spearheaded by the United States. “China is ready to strengthen coordination and collaboration with North Korea on regional and international issues, oppose all forms of hegemonism, and safeguard their shared interests, fairness, and international justice,” he stated.

Choe concluded her visit by calling the Xi-Kim summit a “strategic impetus” for cooperation. She confirmed North Korea’s intent to implement the agreements reached by the leaders, promising to enhance friendly exchanges and elevate bilateral cooperation to “a new level.” Choe also reiterated Pyongyang’s commitment to resist “unilateralism and power politics” and to advocate for a “more just” international order.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that both parties achieved a “total consensus” on international and regional issues during their talks.

This latest affirmation of ties follows Kim Jong-un’s visit to Beijing earlier in September, during which he participated in commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia while meeting with Xi. At the time, both leaders agreed to continue bilateral cooperation “despite changes in the international situation.”

China remains North Korea’s primary political ally and economic partner, with trade, investment, and humanitarian assistance from Beijing critical to supporting Pyongyang’s economy, which struggles under international sanctions and recently bolstered military cooperation with Russia.
