Diplomat Mao Responds to Zelensky’s Doubts About Beijing’s Impartiality
On August 22, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning asserted that China is committed to contributing to the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, reports 24brussels.
Mao’s statement followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s skepticism regarding Beijing’s ability to act as an impartial guarantor of Ukraine’s security. “China is willing, in accordance with the will of the parties concerned, to work with the international community to continue playing a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis,” she stated, providing a direct response to Zelenskyy’s comments.
“We believe all parties should contribute to a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, one based on universal and comprehensive cooperation and a sustainable security outlook. China is ready to play a constructive role in this matter,” Mao emphasized.
The Chinese diplomat also reaffirmed that her country’s impartial position on the Ukraine conflict is “evident to all parties involved.” This claim comes as discussions surrounding potential future security guarantees for Ukraine are reignited, particularly in light of the recent meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, aimed at exploring a negotiated resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has indicated that Russia is open to the possibility of security guarantees for Ukraine being offered by members of the United Nations Security Council, which may include both Western nations and China. This development highlights the complexities surrounding international perspectives on Ukraine’s security as various countries stake their claims and seek influence in the region.
