Danish Defense Measures Intensify Amidst Ongoing Drone Incidents
A German frigate, the FSG Hamburg, has arrived in Copenhagen to assist with airspace surveillance as Denmark grapples with a series of unidentified drone sightings that have persisted over the last week, reports 24brussels.
The Danish Defense Ministry confirmed overnight incidents where drones were spotted at various military locations. In response, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen expressed concerns about the current security landscape. “We are currently in a difficult security situation,” he stated, emphasizing the need for optimal working conditions for the Armed Forces and Police during the upcoming EU summit.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has characterized the situation as indicative of a “hybrid war” in Europe, with many signs pointing to potential Russian involvement in these incursions. The rising tensions coincide with recent breaches of airspace by Russian drones and aircraft in Poland and Estonia, respectively. In response to a Russian attack on Ukraine, Poland scrambled jets and closed portions of its airspace as a precautionary measure.

In light of these developments, Denmark has issued a ban on drone flights, which will carry penalties of fines or imprisonment for violations committed between Monday and Friday. However, exemptions may be sought by companies in “very special cases” through the Transport Ministry’s official channels.
