Denmark Urges EU Action on Hungary’s Blockade of Ukraine’s Membership

Denmark’s Minister for European Affairs, Bjerre, emphasized the need for the European Union to consider limiting access to EU funds for member states that breach European law. This statement comes amid growing concerns regarding Hungary’s obstruction of Ukraine’s EU membership application, reports 24brussels.

Bjerre highlighted that Denmark is prepared to explore all political and practical solutions to advance Ukraine’s accession. The minister’s remarks signal a determination within Denmark to push for progress in EU enlargement, particularly in light of ongoing tensions with Hungary, which has been blocking Ukraine’s membership.

Should EU nations decide to intensify the Article 7 procedure against Hungary, the country could lose its voting rights on critical European policies, including enlargement. Such a move would eliminate Hungary’s veto power over Ukraine’s membership. However, diplomats warn that significant backing from key players like France and Germany is necessary to galvanize support throughout the EU—a consensus that has yet to materialize.

The ongoing deadlock has prompted speculation that the European Commission may initiate the membership negotiations for Moldova, which has been advancing alongside Ukraine in its EU aspirations. The potential separation of Moldova’s bid from Ukraine’s could generate significant controversy among member states.

Nevertheless, Bjerre reiterated Denmark’s commitment to keeping the membership applications of Moldova and Ukraine together, stating, “It is still our goal to open cluster one together with Moldova and Ukraine.”

As the situation develops, the pressure mounts on EU leaders to address the impasse and find a resolution that satisfies both enlargement ambitions and adherence to European legal standards.
