Denmark Chooses SAMP/T Air Defense System Over Patriot

Denmark has officially selected the SAMP/T air defense system, marking a pivotal moment in Europe’s defense procurement landscape amid growing tensions with the U.S., reports 24brussels. This decision underscores a concerted effort within Europe to reduce reliance on American military technology, especially given President Trump’s contentious remarks regarding potential annexation of Greenland.

The acquisition is also a significant victory for France, as recently appointed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had vigorously advocated for the SAMP/T system while serving as the country’s armed forces minister. His lobbying efforts aimed at persuading other European nations of the SAMP/T’s advantages over the Patriot system produced fruit in this context.

By choosing the SAMP/T, Denmark becomes the third European nation, following France and Italy, to adopt this cutting-edge defense technology developed by MBDA and Thales. This development signifies a growing confidence among European countries in their own defense capabilities, moving away from U.S. dependency.

“The systems have been selected based on an overall assessment of operational, economic, and strategic factors,” stated the Danish defense ministry. This rationale reflects a comprehensive evaluation of Denmark’s defense needs and regional security considerations.

The total estimated cost associated with the procurement and operation of these air and missile defense systems is approximately 58 billion kroner (€7.7 billion). This investment highlights Denmark’s commitment to enhancing its defense posture amid evolving security dynamics in Europe.
