Ethiopia Launches Ambitious Tree Planting Initiative
On July 31, 2025, Ethiopia mobilized millions of citizens to plant 700 million tree seedlings in a single day as part of the national Green Legacy Initiative, which marks its seventh anniversary. This massive campaign commenced at 6:00 AM local time and is spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, representing the unity and resolve of the Ethiopian population, reports 24brussels.
Ahmed highlighted the significance of this initiative on social media, asserting that it transcends mere tree planting. It serves as a rallying call for all Ethiopians, young and old, in urban and rural areas, to engage in environmental restoration, protect water sources, enhance livelihoods, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
“This is about more than planting trees,” Ahmed stated. “It is about securing our future—protecting our environment, strengthening our food systems, and preserving the infrastructure we built with our blood, sweat, and resources.”
Reports indicate that for this rainy season, Ethiopia has prepared 8.5 billion seedlings of forest, fruit-bearing, and ornamental species, aiming for a cumulative total of 48 billion seedlings over the next seven years. This ambitious forestry program seeks to combat climate change and restore the environment.
Ethiopia plans to present its Green Legacy experience as a model at the upcoming 2nd Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) scheduled for September in Addis Ababa, showcasing its commitment to climate resilience and inspiring efforts across the continent.
