EU Law Negotiations Halt as Italy Withdraws Support
The negotiations surrounding a pivotal EU law have come to a standstill following Italy’s withdrawal of support, effectively dismantling the majority backing the deal, reports 24brussels.
Center-left and centrist lawmakers have criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for capitulating to her center-right European People’s Party, which expressed opposition to the rule last week. This backlash prompted the Polish Council presidency, responsible for overseeing negotiations for EU nations, to suspend talks pending further clarification from the European Commission regarding its intentions.
The situation worsened on Monday when Italy officially retracted its backing for the legislation, bringing the negotiations to a complete halt. In a statement concerning the disruption, a Commission official emphasized that the responsibility now lies with EU countries to determine a path forward, stating, “It’s up to the Council to state what its intentions are, and then we see from there. But that’s because of the Italians withdrawing; the Commission has not withdrawn.”
The Polish presidency confirmed that EU ambassadors will convene to discuss the matter on Wednesday. A spokesperson remarked, “Since a lot has happened in recent days, it’s important to take time to hear from [EU countries] and carefully reflect on the way forward together.”
