EU Asylum System Discussions Stalled Amid Division Among Member States

Discussions among EU governments regarding a mandatory recognition system for asylum decisions from other member states have hit an impasse, Danish Migration Minister Rasmus Stoklund reported after a meeting in Luxembourg. Denmark’s proposal to amend the European Commission’s original draft has not garnered sufficient support, leaving national governments “too divided,” he stated, reports 24brussels.

Magnus Brunner, the EU Commissioner for Migration, emphasized the “lot of cooperation” and willingness among nations to reform the asylum system. He warned that “time is of the essence,” echoing a call last year from EU leaders for “determined action” on deportations amid an approaching June deadline.

The failure to implement a cohesive system may carry significant political repercussions for the EU’s central governing body. Alberto-Horst Neidhardt, a senior policy analyst at the European Policy Centre, highlighted that member states’ reluctance to adhere to the EU’s migration pact could “fundamentally undermine the credibility of the common European asylum system.”

He outlined a worst-case scenario where this inaction would lead to the reinstatement of internal border controls throughout the Schengen area, alongside systematic pushbacks at external borders. Neidhardt cautioned that such developments would pose systemic threats to the European Union and could spark a political backlash, with far-right factions poised to claim validation for their positions.

Neidhardt stressed that the current political landscape differs markedly from that of 2015 during the last migration crisis, as national governments now exhibit greater self-interest. The urgency and complexity of the situation underline the challenges facing the EU in achieving consensus on a critical policy issue that impacts millions within and beyond its borders.
