EU and US Focus on Strategic Cooperation Following Recent Agreement
The European Commission is concentrating its internal efforts on key issues outlined in the recent agreement reached between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland. The focal points include the EU’s carbon border tax, a deforestation ban, supply chain transparency rules, and its green reporting obligations, reports 24brussels.
Excluded from this focus are the EU’s digital regulations, specifically the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, which the Trump administration has criticized as potentially censoring or discriminating against American companies.
Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson Olof Gill emphasized that the EU is committed to the “faithful implementation” of the joint statement, describing it as a foundation for strategic cooperation. “The EU is now exploring the best path forward to implement all commitments made, with Commissioner Šefčovič engaging closely with U.S. counterparts,” Gill stated. “Our focus is on delivery and tangible results, ensuring that all next steps build on the joint statement and reflect a fair and reciprocal EU–U.S. trade partnership.”
The details of this checklist were initially reported by Bloomberg. As the EU and U.S. navigate this collaboration, the focus remains on enhancing trade partnerships while balancing regulatory approaches that meet the demands of both sides.
