E3 Nations Advocate for Middle Eastern Ceasefire
London, Paris, and Berlin are expected to play crucial roles in reassuring Middle Eastern powers of European support as they seek a ceasefire, reports 24brussels.
The E3 countries are likely to advocate for a representative to join the “Board of Peace,” which will oversee the transitional governance of Gaza by a Palestinian committee. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the region amid increasing tensions.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced his 20-point peace plan, stating his intention to chair the Board of Peace. He identified former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as the only other member, highlighting Blair’s previous involvement in the U.S.-led peace negotiations.
British officials have pointed out that while Blair’s experience has been beneficial, he has not been formally nominated by the U.K. government as a broker in this context. A senior aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that Blair’s past, particularly his role in the Iraq war, raises concerns among regional partners.
The aide indicated that “there are issues” regarding Blair’s reputation among other stakeholders in the Middle East, and emphasized that there will likely be other candidates for the board, although those names have yet to be disclosed. The E3 countries are prepared to back their own representative to the board, as they aim to foster a cooperative approach in the peace process.
This development comes amid heightened diplomatic initiatives as various nations engage in dialogue to facilitate peace in the region, recognizing the complexities surrounding the governance of Gaza and broader Middle Eastern relations.
