Weber Criticizes Greenwashing Bill Amid Political Tensions
European People’s Party (EPP) leader Manfred Weber has condemned the controversial greenwashing bill, which is central to the ongoing political crisis in the European Union, describing it as “grotesque bureaucratic madness.” The bill, supported by centrist and left-leaning groups, mandates that businesses obtain approval for ecological advertising before publication, a move Weber firmly opposes. “I will not support it,” he stated, emphasizing his strong disapproval, reports 24brussels.
The EPP’s dissatisfaction escalated two days prior when the European Commission signaled its intent to withdraw the Green Claims Directive. The EPP had previously sent a letter to the Commission advocating for the bill’s termination, leading to heightened tensions within center-left factions of the parliament. There are growing concerns that the EPP, as the largest political group in the European Parliament, wields significant influence over both parliamentary and Commission decisions.
In response to criticism from left-leaning parties, Weber implied that a rapprochement is unlikely. He targeted Socialist Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, criticizing his stance on the NATO spending target of 5% of GDP. “One problem with European defense is the Socialist Sánchez, who is questioning solidarity in European security in order to score points with his own coalition with left-wing extremists and separatists,” Weber remarked.
Moreover, Weber highlighted the urgency for Europe to develop a sustainable defense strategy. He warned, “We have a two-year window of opportunity. After that, presidential elections in France and parliamentary elections in Poland will take place.” He stressed the significance of the year 2027 for Europe, stating, “By then, Europe must prove its ability to act.”
International observers will be closely monitoring the unfolding political dynamics as the EU navigates these complex issues regarding environmental regulations and defense strategies.
