France Signals Potential for Diplomacy Amid Renewed Sanctions on Iran
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated on Saturday that Paris is willing to engage in discussions with Iran to avert the reimposition of stringent sanctions, provided Tehran demonstrates a commitment to act promptly, reports 24brussels.
On Friday, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom informed the United Nations that extensive global sanctions against Iran, which had been lifted ten years ago, would be reinstated within 30 days. This decision stems from Iran’s failure to cooperate with the international community regarding its nuclear program.
While reiterating France’s readiness to reapply sanctions, Barrot emphasized the importance of ongoing diplomatic dialogue. “What happens now?” he posed. “A 30-day period opens at the end of which sanctions can be applied. Then European sanctions could also be applied — unless of course Iran agrees within this 30-day period to take the actions which we have been very clearly asking of it,” he explained.
“The door of diplomacy remains open,” he concluded, underscoring a potential pathway for negotiations amid escalating tensions.
