European Union Considers Sanctions Over Georgian Opposition Leaders’ Convictions

The European Union is evaluating sanctions against judges in Georgia following the imprisonment of four opposition leaders for failing to testify before parliament. This decision was announced by EU Commissioner Kaja Kallas on Monday, following the sentencing of Mamuka Khazaradze, Badri Japaridze, Zurab Japaridze, and Giorgi Vashadze to seven to eight months in prison, along with two-year bans from holding public office, reports 24brussels.

The opposition leaders, none of whom served in the prior government, were summoned by parliament but refused to comply, leading to their prosecution. This situation has raised significant concerns regarding judicial independence and political repression in Georgia.

Kallas emphasized the EU’s readiness to impose further restrictive measures against those accountable for the judges’ actions, stating, “We stand ready to consider further restrictive measures on those who are responsible.” The EU’s response will be reviewed in July as the political situation in Georgia continues to evolve.

In addition to the convicted leaders, more opposition members are currently facing similar summons and could also be sentenced for their defiance. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze declared that any individual who does not comply with parliamentary requests “will go to jail.” This firm stance signifies an escalating crackdown on dissent in the country.

The backdrop of this legal turmoil is Georgia’s ongoing struggle for democratic consolidation and the rule of law, as the government faces criticism both domestically and internationally. The increased pressure from the EU may influence the Georgian government’s approach to opposition and judicial practices in the coming months.
