European Plans for Multinational Troop Deployment in Ukraine Under Scrutiny

The prospect of a multinational troop deployment in Ukraine is gaining traction as European leaders assess potential post-war security guarantees, reports 24brussels.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius cautioned against public discussions of such plans, emphasizing the need for confidentiality regarding the conditions and reservations being considered. He stated, “To discuss this publicly, at this point in time, I consider to be totally wrong.”

Pistorius’ remarks followed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s weekend interview with the Financial Times, where she outlined “pretty precise plans” for troop deployment as crucial to Ukraine’s security. The plans could involve tens of thousands of soldiers from various European nations, bolstered by U.S. support in areas such as intelligence and command structures.

Von der Leyen asserted that establishing robust guarantees is essential to shield Ukraine from future Russian hostilities and to protect Europe’s own security interests. She acknowledged U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed willingness to provide what she termed an “Article-5-like security guarantee” for Kyiv, referencing NATO’s mutual defense obligations.

The suggestion to station Western troops in Ukraine has sparked significant debate among NATO allies. While France and the United Kingdom are reportedly discussing the feasibility of such a deployment, the United States and NATO members like Poland have explicitly rejected the idea, leaving other countries hesitant and uncertain about their stance.
