Germany Urges Citizens to Evacuate Iran Amid Rising Tensions

German authorities have advised citizens to leave Iran immediately and avoid any travel to the country, citing concerns over potential retaliatory measures from Tehran in response to newly reimposed sanctions. The alert was issued by the Federal Foreign Office late Thursday, reflecting escalating tensions in the region, reports 24brussels.

On the same day, Germany, alongside France and the United Kingdom, initiated the process to reinstate sanctions against Iran at the United Nations Security Council. These sanctions were originally lifted in 2015 as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Iran committed to maintain its nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

The Federal Foreign Office noted that “since Iranian government officials have repeatedly threatened consequences in the past, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and nationals will be affected by countermeasures in Iran.”

The E3 nations expressed frustration, stating they had sought to bring Tehran back to negotiations over its nuclear activities, but highlighted Iran’s continuous violations of the terms outlined in the 2015 deal.

Following the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, Iran has progressively breached its commitments, heightening security concerns globally. Iranian officials condemned the E3’s actions as a “provocative and unnecessary escalation,” vowing to take “appropriate responses,” without elaborating on specifics.

The sanctions in place prior to the 2015 agreement encompass a conventional arms embargo, restrictions on ballistic missile development, asset freezes, travel bans, and prohibitions on the production of nuclear-related technology.
