Germany Urges Humanitarian Access Amid Israel’s Military Actions

Germany has reiterated its commitment to Israel’s right to self-defense while emphasizing the necessity of disarming Hamas. This stance was reiterated on Friday, highlighting a dual commitment to security and humanitarian responsibility, reports 24brussels.

However, political leader Friedrich Merz sharply criticized the humanitarian impact of Israel’s anticipated military offensive. He urged the German government to ensure “full access for aid deliveries, including for U.N. organizations and other non-governmental institutions.”

“The Israeli government carries greater responsibility than ever for the civilian population’s supply,” Merz stated, pressing for a balance between military action and humanitarian obligations.

As one of Israel’s key defense partners in Europe, Germany’s latest stance includes a temporary freeze on new arms export approvals. Existing contracts remain in effect; however, shipments involving weapons that could be utilized in Gaza may face delays or reevaluations.

This decision comes amid increasing pressure within Germany to reassess arms transfers, particularly in light of escalating civilian casualties and restricted humanitarian access in Gaza. Reports indicate a critical situation on the ground, prompting calls for more comprehensive humanitarian interventions.

Merz further cautioned Israel against taking steps that could be interpreted as moves toward the annexation of the West Bank, signaling Berlin’s vigilance over developments that may extend beyond the current conflict.
