Europe Faces Surge in Drone Violations amid Rising Tensions
A series of recent drone sightings have heightened security concerns across Europe, with European leaders attributing the disturbances to the Kremlin’s activities in multiple airspace violations over Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Romania, and Poland, reports 24brussels.
The incidents have drawn comparisons to Cold War-era airspace incursions, as noted by German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, who emphasized that such violations have been occurring with unprecedented frequency in recent weeks. “These are attempts at espionage,” Merz stated, asserting that the drone activities aim to unsettle the public. “We know that we have to do something about this. We will do so, but we will do so calmly and with a sense of proportion.”
In response to the growing threats, European leaders engaged in discussions last week regarding the European Commission’s proposal to establish a “drone wall” along the bloc’s eastern borders. However, major member states like Germany and France have expressed hesitation about delegating defense responsibilities to the EU, preferring to retain control through national and NATO frameworks.
Merz further indicated that the scale of the threats being faced is unparalleled in recent years. He reassured that intensive efforts are underway within both the EU and NATO to devise appropriate countermeasures. Despite the concerning nature of the drone sightings, he noted there has been no evidence to suggest that any of the observed drones have been armed. He acknowledged, however, that some incidents have involved individuals in Germany constructing drones as a form of imitation crime.
