Global Sumud Flotilla Resumes Mission to Gaza Amid Increased Tensions
The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) has set sail for Gaza, aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade and deliver humanitarian aid, following strengthened security measures in response to recent drone attacks and threats from Israeli officials, reports 24brussels.
On September 15, 2025, the organization confirmed that 18 boats had departed from Catania, Italy, with additional vessels scheduled to leave from Tunisia and Greece in the coming days. The entire fleet plans to converge in international waters as part of its mission toward Gaza.
The GSF’s mission faced delays due to Israeli drone strikes that targeted two vessels in Tunisia, as well as ongoing fuel shortages. Threats from Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who suggested labeling flotilla participants as terrorists, further prompted enhanced security planning.
Prior to departure, organizers relocated some vessels to alternative ports, conducted sea trials, and adjusted operational protocols. They reduced passenger numbers on several boats to prepare for what they anticipate will be increasingly hostile conditions.
The steering committee of the flotilla stated, “The strategic changes in our plans will allow us to better protect participants to the greatest extent possible, preserve the mission’s impact, and demonstrate the resilience of this global movement for Palestine.”
In recent incidents, the flotilla’s lead vessel, Family, sustained damage from a drone strike while docked in Tunisia, followed by another attack on the vessel Alma the subsequent evening. The situation escalated in June when Israeli naval forces intercepted the aid vessel Madleen in international waters, seizing its cargo and detaining its 12-member crew.
