Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel early Tuesday, just an hour after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire agreement between the two nations was in effect, reports 24brussels.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the missile barrage was detected during the morning hours and was mostly intercepted, with no immediate casualties reported. However, subsequent attacks by Tehran killed at least four people in the southern city of Beersheba, according to Israel’s national ambulance service.
In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military had been ordered to carry out intense strikes on regime targets in the heart of Tehran. A wave of Israeli airstrikes followed before dawn, targeting multiple strategic sites across Iran.
Earlier that same day, both Israel and Iran had signaled their acceptance of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Israeli officials declared that all military objectives had been achieved, while Iran’s foreign minister also indicated Tehran’s willingness to observe the agreement.
Trump had labeled the recent conflict the “12 Day War” and on Monday evening announced that a ceasefire had been reached. By early Tuesday, he confirmed it was in effect and warned both sides, “Please do not violate it!”
Just hours later, hostilities resumed.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised the ceasefire in a Tuesday morning statement, calling it “an important step toward restoring stability.” She urged Iran to commit to a “credible diplomatic process,” emphasizing that negotiations remain the only sustainable path forward.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also voiced his support for the ceasefire effort, calling it “a very positive development” and encouraging continued dialogue.
The renewed violence came after weeks of escalation. Earlier this month, Israel launched strikes against Iranian nuclear infrastructure and senior military figures. The U.S. entered the conflict directly over the weekend, when it bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in support of Israel.
In retaliation, Iran fired on a U.S. air base in Qatar on Monday, just hours before Trump’s ceasefire announcement.
