Ireland warns of Eurovision withdrawal over Israel’s participation concerns

Irish broadcaster RTÉ has expressed serious concern over the targeted killing of journalists in Gaza and the restricted access international journalists face in the area, alongside ongoing hostage situations, reports 24brussels.

Ireland has emerged as one of the most vocal critics within the European Union regarding Israel’s substantial military response following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities, predominantly among civilians. In reaction to Ireland’s recognition of Palestinian statehood amidst growing accusations of genocide in Gaza, Israel closed its embassy in Dublin last December.

During a general assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in July, several member representatives questioned Israel’s involvement in the upcoming 2026 competition set to occur in Vienna next May.

Countries such as Slovenia and Spain have also indicated their potential withdrawal from the competition if Israel’s participation goes ahead, further complicating the political landscape around the event.

The EBU announced a commitment to engage in a “structured and in-depth” dialogue with member broadcasters regarding the management of participation in light of geopolitical tensions, aiming to align with how similar challenges have been previously navigated.

The EBU is expected to deliver its recommendations in the autumn, which will play a crucial role in determining the overall structure of the event.

As a result, a decision concerning Ireland’s involvement in the contest will be made once the EBU finalizes its stance on Israel’s participation, according to RTÉ.

In the meantime, Israel’s public broadcaster KAN has stated its intent to participate in the Eurovision competition in May 2025, asserting that it adheres strictly to the competition’s regulations.
