Israel Prepares for Full Occupation of Gaza Amid Rising Tensions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesperson announced the intention to “totally occupy the Gaza Strip” during a media briefing, citing a meeting of the security cabinet scheduled for today aimed at discussing the full occupation of the enclave, reports 24brussels.
While Netanyahu aims for an escalation in military operations, other political analysts noted that the final decision has yet to be made and rests with the cabinet, as reported by Channel 14. With concerns regarding hostages, a security debate at the cabinet is anticipated to deliberate on the continuation and potential expansion of military actions.
The spokesperson emphasized that operations would proceed even in areas where hostages might be present, asserting that any disagreement from the Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, would warrant his resignation. This remark underscores the growing divide between military and political leaders regarding operational strategies.
Army Radio has reported that tensions between Lieutenant General Zamir and the political sphere have reached critical levels. Inside confidential meetings, Zamir reportedly cautioned that a prolonged military presence in Gaza could jeopardize Israeli forces, inadvertently benefiting Hamas and straining military resources.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the army is expected to propose two strategies: a complete occupation of Gaza, which Zamir opposes, and a strategy focused on containment and attrition, supported by military leadership. Recent reports from Yedioth Ahronoth suggested that US President Donald Trump had granted Israel permission to escalate its military activities in the region.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have executed extensive military operations in Gaza, resulting in nearly 61,000 Palestinian deaths, including a significant number of women and children. This ongoing offensive has devastated the Gaza Strip, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and pushing the population dangerously close to starvation.
The complexity of the situation is reinforced by the international community’s mounting calls for a ceasefire and a more measured response to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the region. The conflict continues to evoke strong reactions and raises crucial questions about the long-term impact on both Israeli and Palestinian populations.
