Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon breach ceasefire and heighten regional tensions

Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes on Thursday targeting multiple rural areas in southern Lebanon, including Al-Gabour, Al-Qatrani, Al-Jarmaq, Al-Mahmoudiya, and the town of Kfar Kila, reports 24brussels.

According to regional media reports, drones fired several projectiles, one of which struck a municipal vehicle. The attacks mark a clear breach of the ceasefire agreement in place since November 2024.

The Israeli military claimed the strikes were aimed at “terrorist infrastructure” and a Hezbollah rocket launcher, citing violations of the truce by the Iran-backed group.

However, the timing of the attacks coincides with mounting pressure from the Lebanese government—aligned with U.S. interests—to disarm Hezbollah, a move the group has firmly rejected while Israeli military operations continue in Gaza and Lebanon.

U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack, who has been promoting a disarmament plan for Hezbollah, canceled part of his tour in southern Lebanon amid protests.

He stated that the Lebanese government is expected to present its proposal in the coming days, suggesting that Gulf investments could replace Iranian support if Hezbollah agrees to lay down arms.

The strikes come amid a broader pattern of Israeli military activity in Lebanon. According to reports, the IDF has conducted hundreds of operations since the ceasefire began, including targeted assassinations and destruction of Hezbollah infrastructure.

The Israeli government has expressed conditional willingness to reduce its military presence if Lebanon moves forward with disarmament efforts.

Meanwhile, southern Lebanon—still recovering from last year’s war—faces renewed devastation. Critics argue that Israel’s repeated violations of ceasefire agreements reflect a calculated strategy to assert regional dominance and undermine resistance movements.
