Dockworkers Threaten Blockade if Flotilla is Attacked
In response to recent drone attacks on their flotilla, dockworkers have declared it a tripwire for potential escalations, pledging to impede shipments associated with Israel should further assaults occur. The flotilla includes notable activist Greta Thunberg, reports 24brussels.
According to Riccardo Rudino, a veteran dockworker and leader in the CALP collective, obstructing all shipments to and from Israel represents the sole viable option to instigate a policy shift. “If they attack the flotilla, there will be a general strike and, if Israel doesn’t alter course in Gaza, a total trade blockade,” Rudino stated. “There is no other path.”
Rudino drew attention to the protest movement a month ago with a viral speech, asserting that any interference with the flotilla would trigger a blockade affecting “all of Europe,” stressing that “not a single nail” would depart Genoa for Israel.
This movement builds on a longstanding tradition of dockworkers obstructing arms shipments, with Rudino citing historical examples. “It seemed impossible with South Africa, but after a total block they freed Mandela and held elections,” he remarked.
Rudino emphasized a collective desire among people to align with what he termed the “right side of history.” He noted, “Blocking things is the people’s weapon. We don’t have tanks; we don’t have missiles — blocking things, at times with our bodies, is the only weapon at our disposal.”
The situation is increasingly pressing for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, which faces mounting calls for a firmer stance against Israel and recognition of Palestinian statehood. This issue has become a focal point in regional elections that began Sunday and will extend through November.
Additionally, Italy’s largest union, CGIL, has signaled its intent to initiate a general strike if the flotilla faces any further attacks, underscoring the escalating tensions and the dockworkers’ commitment to their cause.
