Italian MEPs Seek Political Relevance with Upcoming Elections
The European Parliament is witnessing a shift as several Italian lawmakers seek to regain political relevance ahead of local elections scheduled for September 28 and 29. Matteo Ricci, a member of the Democratic Party (PD), is the first to leave Brussels to contest a local election in the Marche region, reports 24brussels.
Antonio Decaro, a prominent PD figure and current chair of the European Parliament’s environment and food safety committee, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Puglia region this fall. Should Decaro secure victory, his party colleague Annalisa Corrado, known for her loyalty to PD leader Elly Schlein, is poised to take over his position in the European Parliament.
In addition to Ricci and Decaro, other influential figures such as Dario Nardella, the former mayor of Florence, and Stefano Bonaccini, the ex-governor of Emilia-Romagna, are reportedly preparing to run for national parliamentary seats in the upcoming general election in 2027. These developments reflect a wider ambition among the PD to reconnect with their voter base.
The political landscape in Italy shows that the desire for domestic political roles is not limited to the Socialists. There is a notable trend among various parties as they strategize for upcoming elections, seeking to regain influence both in regional governance and the national political arena.
