Japan Condemns Israel’s Military Expansion in Gaza

On Saturday, Japan firmly rejected Israel’s decision to escalate its military operations aimed at taking control of Gaza City, warning that this action could “further aggravate the already grave humanitarian situation in Gaza” and jeopardize the prospects of achieving a two-state solution, reports 24brussels.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya expressed “deep concern” regarding the announcement made by the Israeli government last Friday. He urged all parties to “resume negotiations and work in good faith to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages.” Iwaya reiterated Japan’s stance against actions that undermine the realization of a two-state solution, which Tokyo has consistently supported to ensure the coexistence of an independent Palestinian state in peace and security.

“Improving the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza is an urgent priority,” Iwaya emphasized. He called upon Israel to take meaningful steps to alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis, which includes severe hunger, and urged compliance with international law, particularly international humanitarian law.

The Israeli Security Cabinet approved a military strategy on Friday, proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which entails the occupation of Gaza City in the northern region of the enclave. This decision has drawn significant condemnation from the international community. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the cancellation of military equipment exports to Israel that could potentially be deployed in Gaza.

Reactions have poured in from various international entities, including the European Commission, the United Nations, and numerous countries such as Spain, Belgium, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Australia, all expressing their opposition to Israel’s military plans.
