Growing Pressure on UK Prime Minister Over Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. French President Emmanuel Macron has intensified the international discourse by pledging recognition of a Palestinian state this September, reports 24brussels.
At the domestic front, many of Starmer’s Cabinet ministers are advocating for a reassessment of his stance on Palestinian statehood. Last week, 221 Members of Parliament from various parties signed a letter urging this change.
Despite this, the Prime Minister remains hesitant, opting instead to pursue his own “pathway to peace.” He compared this initiative to the “coalition of the willing” that he organized to support Ukraine.
Details regarding this peace plan remain under wraps, but Starmer broached the subject during a meeting with former President Donald Trump in Scotland on Monday.
During their discussion, Trump acknowledged the “real starvation” occurring in Gaza and expressed a willingness to collaborate with European allies to “set up food centers.”
However, a senior Labour MP, speaking anonymously to provide candid insights, cautioned that Starmer’s diplomatic approach may distance him further from his party members. “He’s much more cautious than almost anyone else in the party,” the MP remarked.
As humanitarian concerns grow, the pressure on Starmer to align more closely with the prevailing sentiments among his colleagues increases, challenging his leadership and foreign policy strategy.
