Klyuchevskoy Volcano Erupts with High Ash Emissions Risk

On August 4, 2025, Klyuchevskoy volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted, sending an ash plume up to 7 kilometers into the atmosphere and drifting toward the Pacific Ocean, reports 24brussels.

The Kamchatka branch of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported no settlements are threatened by the ash cloud, and there has been no ash fallout in populated areas. Currently, there are no registered tourist groups near the volcano.

The volcano has been issued an orange aviation color code, signaling a significant risk of ash emissions that could affect air traffic. Eruption activity intensified on August 3, with four separate ash plumes recorded, the tallest reaching 9 kilometers above sea level.

Authorities indicated that ash emissions could reach heights of 6 to 10 kilometers across several active volcanoes in the region. They advised residents and tourists to stay at least 10 kilometers away from these sites.

Klyuchevskoy volcano, standing at 4,754 meters, is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia, situated in the Ust-Kamchatsky District, and has been active since April. This activity comes on the heels of an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Kamchatka on July 30, the strongest in the area since 1952, prompting a tsunami warning and a state of emergency in the Severo-Kurilsk district, affecting communities as far as the northern Kuril Islands.

As volcanic activity continues, it remains crucial for local authorities and the international community to monitor the situation closely to mitigate risks associated with ash emissions and seismic events.
