Pope Leo XIV Meets with Chilean President Gabriel Boric in Vatican
On Monday, Pope Leo XIV engaged in discussions with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, signifying a continuation of strong bilateral relations between the Holy See and Chile, reports 24brussels.
The private meeting was followed by talks between Boric and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, as well as Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States. Both sides expressed satisfaction with their current diplomatic ties and recalled the historical significance of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Chile in 1987.
Boric described his conversation with the Pope as “pleasant and thoughtful,” centering on the Pontiff’s recent exhortation, Dilexi Te, which advocates for serving the most disadvantaged individuals. “I feel called by this message despite not having the gift of faith,” Boric stated. This acknowledgment underscores Boric’s alignment with the Pope’s focus on social justice.
During the meeting, the leaders discussed the painful legacy of abuse cases within the Catholic Church in Chile. The topic specifically addressed the controversies surrounding former Bishop Fernando Karadima and Bishop Juan Barros, which have profoundly affected Pope Francis during his papacy.
While abortion and euthanasia bills promoted by Boric’s administration were not explicitly discussed with the Pope, they were addressed with Cardinal Parolin, highlighting the government’s acknowledgment of the Church’s stance on such issues. Boric reinforced that the government respects the Church’s differing views on these matters.
Discussions with Cardinal Parolin also included Chile’s socio-political challenges, emphasizing the need to combat poverty, address migration issues, and navigate ethical dilemmas. The Vatican’s Press Office noted the significant contribution the Catholic Church makes in these areas, acknowledging its role in the country’s socio-political landscape.
In a gesture of diplomacy, President Boric extended an invitation for Pope Leo XIV to visit Chile, welcoming him on behalf of the Chilean State. On the same day, the Pope held a separate meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, continuing the theme of regional cooperation.
