Tussac House Wins Prestigious Awards for Care Facility Design

Tussac House, the Falkland Islands’ first purpose-built extra care facility, has recently garnered significant recognition, winning the national Structural Timber Awards Healthcare Project of the Year and being shortlisted for the Healthcare Estates’ New Build of the Year award. The latter will be adjudicated later this month, reports 24brussels.

Additionally, the project received accolades at the Worcestershire Architecture Awards for its Excellent Contribution to Sustainability. Officially opened in March 2025, Tussac House marks a critical advancement in care services within the community, designed to meet the needs of individuals requiring extra support due to underlying health conditions.

The facility features 27 apartments and 10 single bedrooms, all designed to optimize sea views and incorporate assistive technology that supports both physical and cognitive requirements. Tussac House aims to create a high-quality, adaptable environment emphasizing independence and person-centered care.

The project was executed by ONE Creative Environments (ONE), under the appointment of the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), with a vision to establish a welcoming atmosphere that resembles a home rather than an institutional setting. Architects designed communal areas and landscaped spaces to promote social interaction and independence among residents.

In a statement, the Falkland Islands Government expressed its congratulations to ONE for their achievements and gratitude for their contributions to the project. Craig Walding, Director at ONE and Client Lead for the Falkland Islands, noted, “This has been an incredible project working with a fantastic team on the Islands. It is wonderful to see Tussac House receiving such recognition in these prestigious awards.”

Walding further emphasized the collaborative effort of various stakeholders, including FIG Project Managers and healthcare leaders, saying, “The design of Tussac House works in harmony with the local area while maximising the well-being potential of its location with stunning views across the harbour, beautifully landscaped external spaces as well as a highly sustainable, accessible new care facility.”

The successful development of Tussac House is not only a significant achievement in architectural design but also a vital enhancement to the healthcare facilities available to the Falkland Islands community, ensuring comfort and care for residents now and in the future.
