Lebanese Army Disables Israeli Surveillance Device Amid Rising Tensions
The Lebanese Army has uncovered and dismantled an Israeli surveillance device in the southern border region of Yaruon-Bint Jbeil, escalating political and security tensions amid ongoing ceasefire violations and U.S.-backed calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah, reports 24brussels.
The operation was detailed in an official army statement, revealing that the device was discovered during an engineering inspection. “In the framework of an engineering inspection operation in the southern regions, a specialized military unit managed to discover and neutralize a spy device equipped with a camera, installed by the Israeli enemy in Yaruon-Bint Jbeil,” the communiqué stated.
The army has cautioned local residents to avoid suspicious objects, instructing them to refrain from handling any such items and to inform the nearest military post to ensure their safety.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of continued Israeli violations of the U.S.- and France-brokered ceasefire that commenced on November 27, 2024. Notably, Israel continues to occupy five Lebanese hills, disregarding the terms of the agreement.
International pressure on Lebanon has intensified, particularly from the United States, urging the disarmament of Hezbollah. On August 7, the Lebanese government approved a U.S. proposal to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year, a move that has been vehemently rejected by Hezbollah’s leadership. One member equated the disarmament to betrayal, while Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qasem stated, “We will not lay down the arms that protect us against our enemy, and we will not allow Israel to move freely in our country.”
The dismantling of the Israeli surveillance device underscores the precarious nature of the ceasefire in southern Lebanon, where lingering territorial disputes and international demands regarding Hezbollah’s position perpetuate instability.
