The resurgence of unilateralism places humanity at a new crossroads, PM Li Qiang said.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 26, 2025, representing President Xi Jinping. In his remarks, he outlined China’s perspective on the current geopolitical landscape, highlighting the urgent need for global cooperation and solidarity to counter unilateralism, reports 24brussels.
Li asserted that “peace and development are the strongest aspirations shared by all nations,” warning that a return to “the law of the jungle,” where the weak succumb to the strong, would lead to increased bloodshed. He urged the international community to reject “bullying” and to avoid silence and submission in the face of powerful aggressors.
The Premier described the world as entering a new phase characterized by a resurgence of unilateralism and Cold War mentalities, placing humanity at a “new crossroads.” He emphasized the importance of treating all countries as equals, advocating for true multilateralism to safeguard the rights and interests of all nations.
Li reiterated China’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and political solutions to major international conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He stated that China “will continue to play a constructive role,” while also acknowledging the need to “respect the legitimate security concerns of all countries,” a reference often interpreted as tacit support for Russia’s strategic ambitions.
Declaring China as a “defender of world peace and security,” he called for global cooperation in addressing shared challenges. Li lamented the rise of protectionism and urged nations to collaborate in defining and expanding common interests, thereby promoting economic globalization and collective progress.
He noted that China has “opened its doors to the world” and is taking necessary steps towards achieving high-quality domestic development that would also foster global economic stability. Notably, he refrained from directly addressing the ongoing trade and technology disputes between China and the United States but mentioned a proposed global initiative for artificial intelligence governance, aimed at ensuring technological advancements serve humanity positively.
Li also touched on environmental issues, advocating for strengthened international cooperation in climate change efforts and the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement. He emphasized the collective responsibility to protect the planet, calling for enhanced efforts in the green economy.
During his speech, Li showcased samples from the Chang’e 6 lunar probe, recently collected from the far side of the Moon, marking China’s milestone as the first nation to successfully land in that area.
