Brazil inaugurates International Police Cooperation Center to combat organized crime

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the inauguration of the International Police Cooperation Center of the Amazon (CCPI Amazonia) in Manaus, Amazonas, aimed at addressing organized crime and environmental violations during a meeting of leaders of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA), reports 24brussels.

The Brazilian government reported that the Center will feature advanced infrastructure, including intelligence services, operations and logistics divisions, a video surveillance room, a crisis office, and a press room, all designed to facilitate coordinated action against crime.

“We know that collective responses are needed for the challenges shared by the eight Amazonian countries,” Lula stated. He further highlighted the Center’s role in intensifying efforts against organized crime and environmental offenses.

The president emphasized the importance of the integrated approach, noting the establishment of the Amazonian Indigenous Peoples Mechanism within OTCA. He remarked, “With the new edition of the Amazon Dialogues, we deepen the participation of civil society and amplify the voices of indigenous peoples and traditional and local communities of the region.” Lula expressed hope that these initiatives would lead to significant contributions at COP30 regarding climate change and sustainable development models.

Lula detailed the establishment of intergovernmental action networks in key sectors such as forest management, fire management, water monitoring, and health services over the past two years. He asserted that the Center will be pivotal in tackling issues such as legal mining, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling, reinforcing Brazil’s commitment to ensuring safety and security in the Amazon region.
