Luxembourg to Recognize State of Palestine at Upcoming UN Summit

Luxembourg will formally recognize the State of Palestine during next week’s United Nations summit in New York, Prime Minister Luc Frieden announced Tuesday, reports 24brussels.

Frieden stated that the worsening humanitarian crisis had left Luxembourg with no choice but to take this step. “The situation on the ground has deteriorated considerably in recent months,” he remarked. “A movement is now emerging in Europe and around the world to demonstrate that the two-state solution is still relevant.”

The announcement coincides with a UN conference aimed at reviving the long-stalled peace framework. Luxembourg’s decision aligns with momentum from French President Emmanuel Macron, who earlier pledged that France would extend recognition to Palestine. Since Macron’s July declaration, over a dozen Western governments have expressed similar intentions.

This shift denotes a substantive change in European policy as condemnation of Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza intensifies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, reaffirmed last week that “there will be no Palestinian state,” dismissing the mounting international pressure.

Currently, nearly three-quarters of UN member states recognize Palestine. The upcoming summit is anticipated to amplify global support for the Palestinian cause and advocate for decisive actions to conclude the ongoing occupation.
