Macron and Merz Strengthen Support for Ukraine Amidst Ongoing Russian Attacks
In a decisive move amid escalating tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering support for Ukraine during ministerial talks in Toulon, southern France, on Friday. Merz had previously expressed skepticism about the prospect of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin, stating, “it is obviously not going to come to a meeting.” Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that failure to facilitate such a meeting will result in “consequences.”
In their discussions, Macron and Merz outlined shared priorities spanning a range of European policies, including energy and financial services. They emphasized the importance of uniting efforts among Western nations to establish security guarantees for Ukraine, particularly in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. As part of this initiative, Macron revealed plans for leaders of the “coalition of the willing” to communicate with Trump over the weekend, followed by a meeting next week.
Additionally, Paris and Berlin have enhanced their defense collaboration, initiating a “strategic dialogue” focusing on nuclear deterrence. This includes a joint effort to develop an “early warning system” designed to relay information regarding ballistic missile launches to NATO allies. However, progress on the long-delayed Future Combat Air System, a flagship fighter jet program, remains stalled.
