Mexico Secures Major Pharmaceutical Investment of Over $641 Million

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has unveiled a substantial investment exceeding 12 billion pesos (approx. US $641 million) from four multinational pharmaceutical firms alongside a local company. This initiative is a cornerstone of her administration’s “Plan México, viento en popa”, designed to bolster domestic drug production, enhance health sovereignty, and create thousands of jobs, reports 24brussels.

The investment package involves key players such as Boehringer Ingelheim, which intends to transform its Xochimilco facility into the world’s largest tablet producer with a capacity of five billion units per year, supported by a $3.5 billion injection. Additionally, Laboratorios Carnot will invest an equivalent amount in building a new biopharmaceutical plant in Hidalgo that is set to generate 600 direct jobs. Bayer México is allocating $3 billion for expanding operations in Orizaba, Lerma, and Tlaxcala utilizing sustainable technologies. Finally, AstraZeneca plans to invest over $2 billion into clinical research and facility expansions in the State of Mexico.

Investment Outcomes and Strategic Importance

This significant influx of capital is expected to create over 3,000 specialized direct jobs and more than 20,000 indirect jobs, while enhancing Mexico’s export capacity to over 40 countries. The initiative will also strengthen innovation hubs in Morelia and Villa de Tezontepec, and improve regulatory efficiencies through COFEPRIS, thereby boosting investor confidence.

President Sheinbaum affirmed that this investment underscores the growing trust in Mexico’s regulatory and industrial landscape. Secretary of Health David Kershenobich referred to the development as a “major transformation,” positioning Mexico as a regional leader in pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing.
