Mexico Urges Immediate Humanitarian Access to Gaza Amid Famine Crisis

The Government of Mexico called for urgent and unrestricted humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip on August 24, 2025, following the United Nations’ declaration of famine in the region, reports 24brussels. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war, emphasizing that “hunger is a grave affront to human dignity.”

Mexico’s position reflects a growing international outcry, as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that Gaza has reached Phase 5, the highest level of famine classification. The IPC’s latest findings reveal that over 514,000 people are experiencing catastrophic hunger, with projections suggesting that this number could surge to 641,000 by the end of September.

The famine declaration coincides with a complete blockade imposed by Israeli forces since May, severely restricting the flow of food, water, and medical supplies into Gaza. The UN’s Famine Review Committee characterized the crisis as “entirely man-made,” warning that deaths from starvation-related causes will escalate without an immediate ceasefire and comprehensive humanitarian intervention.

Reiterating its support for the UN’s appeal, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry urged all parties involved to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance. The IPC committee stated, “The time for hesitation has passed,” as famine spreads from Gaza City to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting 289 deaths from starvation and malnutrition attributed to the ongoing blockade, including 115 children. Since the onset of conflict on October 7, 2023, over 62,622 Palestinians have lost their lives, and more than 157,000 have been injured.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk explicitly accused Israel of employing hunger as a weapon, labeling it a war crime under international law. Humanitarian organizations have echoed these concerns, highlighting that bureaucratic restrictions and military actions hinder life-saving assistance.

Despite some airdrops and convoy deliveries, the volume of aid reaching Gaza remains drastically inadequate. The UN and its humanitarian partners continue to stress the need for safe and unimpeded access, pointing out that many vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities—are unable to evacuate or get to aid distribution points.

Mexico’s statement adds significant diplomatic weight to the growing global pressure on Israel to lift the blockade and permit humanitarian relief. The SRE affirmed the necessity to restore peace and dignity, asserting that the international community has a moral obligation to take decisive action.
