Syria holds first parliamentary elections following fall of Assad government

Polling Stations Open for Syrian Parliamentary Elections

At 9:00 a.m. local time, polling stations opened for over six thousand members of the electoral body to vote for new members of parliament, a critical step in the institutional reconfiguration aimed at rebuilding the Syrian state, reports 24brussels.

Nawar Najma, spokesperson for the Supreme Committee for Elections to the People’s Assembly, stated that the voting process will conclude at 12:00 p.m., with an extension possible until 4:00 p.m. if not all members have cast their votes.

The last legislative elections in Syria occurred in July 2024, during Bashar al-Assad’s presidency. In January 2025, the new political leadership dissolved the Assembly as part of the ongoing institutional transition.

Originally scheduled for September, these elections faced delays due to instability in the northeast, controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and in the southern province of Sweida.
