Moldovan President Accuses Russia of Election Interference
Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Wednesday accused Russia of orchestrating an “unprecedented” campaign aimed at interfering in the country’s upcoming parliamentary election scheduled for September. She warned of a large-scale operation involving illegal financing, cyberattacks, and disinformation efforts, reports 24brussels.
“The Russian Federation wants to control the Republic of Moldova from autumn onwards,” Sandu stated at a press conference in the capital Chișinău. She termed the plan a “direct threat to our state security, the country’s sovereignty, and the European future of Moldova,” urging citizens and institutions to remain vigilant against these threats.
Authorities have pinpointed at least 10 primary methods of interference in the electoral process, which include the potential use of approximately €100 million in cryptocurrencies. Other tactics may involve deepfakes, organized protests, and the participation of Kremlin-affiliated clergy to sway public opinion.
The accusations come amid rising tensions in Eastern Europe, particularly as Moldova seeks to strengthen ties with the European Union. The government fears that external influences could disrupt the nation’s political stability and impede its ambitions for European integration.
In recent months, Moldova has faced various challenges, including a struggling economy and significant migration. The government is implementing measures to counteract any external influence that could undermine its sovereignty.
In response to Sandu’s assertions, Russian officials have denied any involvement in Moldova’s internal politics, dismissing the allegations as baseless. Nevertheless, the Moldovan government remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining national security and adhering to democratic principles in the face of potential external threats.
As the election approaches, the Moldovan authorities are enhancing their cybersecurity frameworks and monitoring systems to detect and counter any malicious activities aimed at disrupting the electoral process.
