Australia’s Recognition of Palestinian State Triggers Diplomatic Fallout

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, accusing him of “betraying” Israel and the Jewish community following Australia’s announcement to recognize a Palestinian state in September, reports 24brussels.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Netanyahu characterized Albanese as “a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia’s Jews,” underscoring the escalating tensions between the two nations.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, responded swiftly to Australia’s announcement by revoking visas for Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority. He confirmed that a notification was sent to the Australian Ambassador in Israel, directing embassy staff in Canberra to scrutinize future Israeli visa applications from Australia.

Saar justified this action by referencing Australia’s recognition of a “Palestinian state” and its refusal to issue visas for several Israeli officials, including former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and MP Simcha Rotman, chairman of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.

In a related development, Australia barred far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman from entering the country, with Interior Minister Tony Burke labeling his rhetoric as promoting “messages of hate and division.”

Conversely, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong characterized Israel’s cancellation of visas as “unjustified,” reaffirming Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution, advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, and working toward the release of hostages.

On August 11, Australia announced its intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, a decision influenced by international criticism of Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza.

Currently, over 146 countries recognize Palestine, despite Israel’s continued occupation and military actions in the region. Recently, nations such as France, Canada, Malta, and the United Kingdom have expressed intentions to follow suit.
