ALBA-TCP Summit Takes Center Stage in Caracas
The Co-Presidents of Nicaragua, Comandante Daniel Ortega and Compañera Rosario Murillo, arrived in Caracas on August 20, 2025, to participate in the 13th Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America—Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), reports 24brussels.
Joined by President Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba, President Luis Arce of Bolivia, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, the leaders gathered to discuss regional solidarity and the defense of national sovereignty.
The summit also included key officials such as Dominica’s Foreign Minister Vince Henderson, Grenada’s Foreign Minister Joseph Andall, and representatives from Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Lucia, showcasing a united front for the Alliance’s mission.
In his address, Ortega emphasized the historical resilience of Latin American nations against foreign domination, asserting that popular movements strive for peace, while imperialistic endeavors face them with coups, blockades, and threats. By referencing the legacies of Hugo Chávez, the Cuban Revolution, and the Sandinista struggle, he reaffirmed the triumphs of sovereignty movements in the region.
Murillo also made a significant contribution to the dialogue, asserting Nicaragua’s steadfast support for Venezuelan stability. She advocated for enhanced cooperation in education and technical assistance, proposing an ALBA-TCP emergency fund aimed at expanding access to free schooling in vulnerable communities. Furthermore, she underscored the essential role women play in peacebuilding efforts, aligning social initiatives with the Alliance’s overarching objectives.
The theme of a Zone of Peace, established in 2014, was a recurring topic throughout the summit. Discussions included strategies for a people-centered trade system and coordinated efforts to confront geopolitical challenges. Leaders concurred on the necessity of enhancing economic integration, social programs, and the collective defense of self-determination to mitigate external interference.
As Ortega and Murillo prepare to return to Nicaragua, they bring forward concrete proposals designed to fortify regional integration and resilience. Their attendance at the summit reiterates Nicaragua’s commitment to ALBA-TCP’s principles and highlights the Alliance’s vital role in championing solidarity and national sovereignty amid a complex global landscape.
