Palestinian representation confirmed at UN General Assembly despite Abbas’ absence

Annalena Baerbock, president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), affirmed that Palestine’s voice will still resonate at the Assembly even if “alternative options” are needed in the absence of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has been denied a visa by the United States government, reports 24brussels.

This situation arose following a decision made on September 1, 2025, to prohibit Abbas from attending the Assembly, stemming from the collapse of prior agreements between the U.N. and the host country regarding visa issuance. The U.N. stated that it is in ongoing discussions with Washington to reverse the visa ban, but indications suggest that Abbas’s physical attendance is unlikely. Officials are now considering the possibility of enabling his participation via videoconference, with a decision expected to be made during an ad hoc session of the UNGA plenary this week.

Despite Abbas’s absence, the Palestinian issue will remain a focal point at the UNGA, with expectations of formal recognition of the State of Palestine by countries such as France, the UK, Canada, and Australia, which had previously resisted this action. The ongoing conflict in Gaza will further amplify discussions on the Palestinian plight during the Assembly.

As Baerbock assumes her role, she confronts significant challenges amidst “enormous financial and political pressure” on the U.N. to enhance its efficiency. Calls for structural reform persist, and Baerbock highlighted threats from unnamed actors seeking to undermine the U.N. Charter, which she described as essential for the global community.

Defending the U.N.’s vital role, Baerbock acknowledged that while the organization is “not perfect”—evidenced by ongoing conflicts worldwide—it is crucial that member states unite in addressing global issues. She emphasized the significance of collective action against pandemics and climate change while recognizing the humanitarian efforts of the U.N. World Food Program, which assists 125 million people, and UNICEF’s support for 26 million children in education globally.

In her remarks, Baerbock underscored the necessity of patience in international diplomacy, citing the Paris climate agreements as an example of successful multilateral cooperation achieved despite setbacks. She called for continued dialogue at the UNGA among all member states, regardless of their differences.

While the U.S. government contemplates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Baerbock affirmed that these will remain a cornerstone of her presidency, emphasizing the commitment to equality and support for underprivileged nations as a collective promise of the international community.
