The Ministry of the Interior identified the arrested individuals as “coyotes,” a term used for human traffickers, linked to the criminal organization known as Los Discretos de la Frontera (The Discreet Ones of the Border). Following their arrest for suspected illegal migrant trafficking, the six Peruvians were handed over to the Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division (Divincri) in Tacna, a region adjacent to Chile.
The operation unfolded between points 10 and 12 along the Peru-Chile border, specifically at kilometer 1,331 of the South Pan-American Highway. The matter has been referred to the local Prosecutor’s Office in Tacna for immediate legal proceedings.
Additionally, the migrants, which included 28 Venezuelans, three Colombians, two Ecuadorians, and five minors, were also taken to Divincri for immigration checks. This process aims to determine any infractions and initiate necessary sanctions.
General Arturo Valverde emphasized that these comprehensive interventions result from intelligence operations and are executed by elite units, including radio patrols and the Criminal Investigation Division of Tacna, effectively addressing cross-border trafficking issues.
